Jun 03, 2011 original transcriptions http://piano-play.com. Jim Clancy: Hymn To Freedom. Dahlgren system 300 manual. This arrangement was premiered by 2018 BHS International Chorus champion Vocal Majority to conclude their 'swan song' set at the 2019 Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention in Salt Lake City, UT. Clancy's arrangement of this Oscar Peterson composition is simple, elegant, and powerful.
Born in Montreal, August 15th,1925. Studied piano and trumpetat age 5, and was forced because of a lung ailment to give upthe trumpet and continue his piano studies. He later attendedthe Montreal Conservatory of Music for a short period, but itwas found that he prospered more readily under private tuition. He became a student of classical pianist Paul deMarkey, underwhose guidance he remained during most of his high school days.In his mid-teens he won First Prize on the Ken Soble Amateur Show.As a result of this, he was then given his own weekly radio showover the CBC network, and became a regular guest on various radioshows such as the Happy Gang and the Light Up and Listen Show.He then spent five years with the Johnny Holmes orchestra in Montreal, and it was during this time that he began doing concert appearancesthroughout the major cities of Canada. It was also during thisperiod that RCA Victor signed him up to make his first recordings.During these years which happened to be war years, he gave freelyof his services and performed on innumerable troupe shows andbond rallies. After the war and during the year 1947, Peterson formed his firsttrio in Montreal and played numerous nightclubs and concerts throughoutthe land. He also continued his activities on the Canadian networks. In 1950 Norman Granz the American impresario, persuaded Petersonto appear at a trial concert in Carnegie Hall in New York Citywhich featured well established stars, for example Ella Fitzgerald, etc. He received rave reviews, and was persuaded to come to theUnited States and make numerous concert appearances. In 1952 hewon his first of twelve Down Beat Awards as the best jazz pianistof the year. He has won, since that time, awards from the MetronomeMagazine, numerous Playboy Awards as the musicians' musician, several awards in England, Japan, Germany, France, Belgium, tomention a few places. His recordings have remained constant sellersthroughout the world, and he has headed various award winningtrios which is still his primary occupation. In the year 1966he composed a lengthy pictorial suite which he dedicated to hiscountry of birth by titling it the 'Canadiana Suite'. In it hehas tried to depict musically, scenes of his homeland. This Suitewas recorded and has remained a constant seller throughout theworld. Apart from his professional activities.
Peterson and his associates formed a school of music in Toronto known as the AdvancedSchool of Contemporary Music which he headed for five years. Theschool drew students from all parts of the world and receivednumerous write-ups in various journals along with the fact thatit was constantly visited by important and interested stars ofthe music world.
They operated the school without the benefit of a grant or anyoutside help and had to relinquish it due to the fact that theirconcert itinerary in various parts of the world was sufferingby their absence. Being unable to continue the school did notdeter Peterson from continuing to teach. He managed this by holdingseminars in the various cities that the trio performed in. Hewas forced to turn down an offer by the German Educational Authorityto conduct a summer seminar for them due to the reasons statedabove.

Hi Al,I came across your site and was impressed with the Oscar Peterson midi files you have. I am working on a project at Roland and would be interested in getting a large collection of these midi files. How much would it cost per song, as these will be played on a digital piano that is on display as a loop. Obviously we would give credit for the arrangements/transcriptions to you. I would need the copyright info on each song for the appropriate mechanical licence to play these publicly.Thank you in advance for your efforts!
Best Regards,
Jeff

Songfacts | Hymn to Freedom, probably the best known composition of Oscar Peterson (1925-2007), was first recorded in 1962 on the album Night Train. The proposal came from Peterson’s producer and friend Norman Granz, who was looking for a ‘definitive early-blues feel’. Oscar Peterson tried to portray the spirituals that he heard at church as a child, trying to keep the melodic and harmonic content simple. The first recording, as well as later studio and live recordings, were all played by a piano, bass and percussion trio. It was only after the first recording that, also from a request by Norman Granz, a song text was commissioned from choral lyricist Harriette Hamilton. A vocal version can be heard here. In the 60’s, Hymn to Freedom became the unofficial hymn of the Civil Rights Movement. This can be attributed to the song’s name, for which was inspired by the Civil Rights movement, and in particular to Martin Luther King. |
